SKETCHING RETREAT IN KEA ISLAND

WORKSHOP WITH PAVLOS HABIDIS

20-27 April and 11-18 May

Join us for a week-long watercolor workshop in Kea Island, led by acclaimed watercolor artist and teacher, Pavlos Habidis.

Kea Island offers a stunning and inspiring setting for artists to explore and capture on paper. With Pavlos' guidance, you'll learn a range of techniques and principles to help you develop your skills and find your artistic voice.

During our workshop, we will focus on creating beautiful watercolor paintings inspired by the island's natural beauty and unique scenery. We'll explore topics such as composition, color theory, brushwork, and painting techniques. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to refine your skills, learn new techniques, and create beautiful watercolor paintings in a beautiful setting.

Our workshop includes daily painting sessions, personalized feedback, and time to explore the island's charming villages, beaches, and local attractions. We'll also indulge in the island's delicious cuisine and enjoy the company of other watercolor enthusiasts.

Pavlos Habidis is an accomplished watercolor artist, with over 30 years of experience in painting and teaching. He has exhibited his work in Greece and internationally, and his paintings are held in private and public collections around the world.

Painting sessions take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and beautiful outdoor locations around the island. This workshop in Kea is designed to give you confidence and enjoy sketching and painting wherever you are, gazing at white Greek village, natural landscapes or the way light is casted in an ancient ruin. Throughout the course we’ll work spontaneously in a variety of themes, where I’ll show you to learn to see the world by drawing, how to compose and structure your drawings and to keep your watercolors fresh and alive.

Each day will start with a short demo and end with a critique, while sitting in a beautiful location, as an ancient theatre or a Mediterranean beach. We will work progressively, from simple to complex scenes, from line to values, from one color to richer color schemes. As part of a small group, you’ll have plenty of individual attention as we work, allowing you to develop at your own pace concepts as composition, perspective, simplifying a scene or capturing the essence of a place. There will be different approaches in each location adapted for beginners or advanced sketchers. We’ll focus on having fun while we sketch, recording as much as we can as we move around town.

The aim is to have you return home with great memories on fat book filled with personal sketches. After this workshop, as you will learn to see Kea through your drawings, I am sure this island will become even more beautiful.

Aside from the practical aspects of our  Skolidays, you can explore the local villages, meet the locals, visit unique archaeological sites, learn the history of the island and enjoy time with like-minded people.

Skill expected from us before attending the workshop:
Just a lot of will to learn, sketch and have fun!

What is the level that we should ideally acquire during the workshop?
Hard question, depends on how hard you work, ideally learn "basic concepts such as composition, perspective, line concepts, and techniques.
Then, tonal values and colour concepts.
Finally, techniques to apply those values and colours like cross-hatching and mainly watercolour" is the goal.

You may never have heard of Kea island, because it's been a bit of a secret destination, known mainly to travellers who like to venture off the beaten track.
KEA ISLAND

Is the closest island to the mainland of the Cyclades group of islands.  It has a brilliant climate and topography and it is this landscape that over the years has drawn Athenian painters. Kea has escaped mass tourism and preserved its natural beauty in part because it has no airport and island-hoppers mostly go via Pireaus. The port for Kea, Lavrio is less known but in fact more easily accessible from Athens airport and has regular services taking one hour.
